the timing of God: you belong in this story

This word statute was a find. I always thought a statute was a law. And it is, but this word statute is a bit different. It is the Hebrew word choq. It is in this one chapter (Psalm 119) 22 times!

This is what it means:

-an enactment

-an appointment of time, space, quantity, labor, usage, portion

-a measure

-a set time

-a decree

-a task

Do you believe that God has perfect timing? Moreover, would you be willing to extend that belief into the realm of actual pieces of time in your very own life? Moments of intersection with other people, seasons of home or wilderness or patience or planting or harvesting, times to work and times to rest, quantities of grace to do things you are called to do for such a time as this, even specific jobs and friendships and opportunities? Think about this. Does any one appointment of time in your life rise up in your mind? Something that you inexplicably know was meant to be…?

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

When I realized that a statute is a God-decreed appointment of time and impact, I started to pray this verse over myself and others:

“Blessed are You, O Lord!

Teach me Your statutes.” (vs 12)

I started to look at every verse with the word statute in it in Psalm 119 differently. The psalmist is asking the Lord, over and over, to help him to recognize the Lord’s timing, intention, plan for his life. To help him keep those appointments. It’s such a basic idea, but so deeply right.

I realized what I am asking for when I pray these verses over my life: Perfect timing. Perfectly ordered steps. The fullness of time in every season. Wonderful beginnings. Excellent finishes. The right quantities of things. All of it led by the One who wrote all of my days down in His book before one even happened.

“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they were all written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.”

Psalm 139:16

Some stuff in the spiritual life must be asked for in order to be acquired. We must ask for help with recognizing God’s timing. For eyes to see it. We have so much power over our choices. His purposes prevail over everything, but whether or not you keep His statues is up to you. You have the freedom to say no.

You were born for such a time as this. If there is something telling you different, recognize the lie and kick it to the curb. Futility is utter nonsense. There is a big picture. There is undeniable purpose and meaning in every cell of your body, in the nuclei, and cytoplasm, and ribosomes, and DNA.

You belong in this story.

Ask Him to teach you His statutes.
